From Monday, February 16, 2026, to Sunday, February 22, 2026, Ukraine will celebrate Masnytsia — the traditional week marking the farewell to winter and the preparation for Great Lent.
In folk tradition, this period is known as Cheesefare Week or Butter Week. During this time, dairy products are still permitted, while meat is no longer consumed. As a result, festive tables are dominated by dishes made with milk, butter, sour cream, and fresh farmer’s cheese (cottage cheese).
The main symbol of the celebration is pancakes, prepared with milk and served with butter, sour cream, honey, or cheese. Traditional dishes also include cheese-filled varenyky, nalysnyky (thin crepes with filling), and other specialties based on dairy ingredients.
Masnytsia brings together ancient folk customs and Christian tradition, reminding us of the importance of the family table, togetherness, and the preservation of culinary heritage.
During these festive days, choose high-quality Ukrainian dairy products, support domestic producers, and uphold the tradition of consuming natural milk and dairy products within your family.
