European Dairy Association

The European Dairy Association (EDA) is the recognised voice of the European dairy industry, providing a European forum for high-level debate on the future of the European lactosphere and in-depth analysis of current issues on the European dairy agenda.

The European Dairy Association is first and foremost a platform for the exchange of experience between European milk processors from all over Europe and all types of dairy companies, cooperatives and private dairies, global dairy leaders and SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises). The EDA Board reflects the diversity of our industry: together with EDA President Albert de Groot (Vreugdenhil, Netherlands), it includes Ingo Müller (DMK, Germany), Jan Teplý (Madeta, Czech Republic), Gilles Gerard (Luxlait, Luxembourg).

The main activities of the European Dairy Association are aimed at the development of the European dairy sector, in particular:

  • dairy processing;
  • trade and economy;
  • nutrition, environment and health;
  • monitoring and reporting in the dairy sector;
  • lobbying for the dairy sector providing information materials.

On 9 May 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Union of Ukrainian Dairy Enterprises (UUDE) and the European Dairy Association (EDA).

To this end, the EDA and the MMSU have agreed to work together and identified key areas of work in a Memorandum of Understanding to be addressed:

• support for free trade in dairy products and protection of investments in Ukraine;
• support for the DCFTA (EU-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement) and EU accession negotiations through cooperation within the framework of the European Integration Committee at the UMCU;
• long-term integration of the Ukrainian dairy sector into the single European market through a joint roadmap;
• creating a list of ‘Ukraine’s dairy needs’ in the context of the EU’s ‘Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment’ under the Ukraine Facility;
• developing and strengthening communication and links in the EU-Ukraine format to exchange best practices for improving productivity and quality at the production level, stimulating demand and raising awareness at the consumer level, as well as to share experiences on the relevant legal framework, trade and marketing standards related to the dairy industry;
• launching a dialogue between Ukraine and the EU on ways to integrate the Ukrainian dairy sector and agriculture within the framework of discussions on the framework for Ukraine’s integration into the future EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP27).

“Ukrainian dairy business has been contributing to the European integration process for 10 years. Therefore, the signing of the Memorandum is a logical step in the movement of the Ukrainian dairy business into the large European dairy family,” said Arsen Didur, Executive Director of the Union of Dairy Enterprises of Ukraine.

“Cooperation with the UUL and the European Dairy Association began a long time ago, even before the Russian attacks on Ukraine. Our joint research underlines the positive effect and long-term integration of the Ukrainian market into the European lactosphere. In other words, we are talking about a bilateral approach and reinforcing the kind of trade relations that could be between Ukraine and the European Union based on deeper ties and autonomous trade and investment,” said Giuseppe Ambrosi, President of the European Dairy Association (2021-2025).
