Ukraine is aligning its requirements for butter and permitted fat-content deviations in dairy products with European Union (EU) rules, according to the official website of the Union of Dairy Enterprises of Ukraine (UDEU).

The document, covering requirements for dairy products and spreadable fats (G/SPS/N/UKR/281), takes into account comments from the European Commission on Order No. 801, notified in April.

The changes concern two provisions:

• butter will be defined as a product obtained «from milk and/or certain milk products», in line with Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013. Previously it had to be made «directly from milk or cream», which was stricter than EU rules;

• permitted deviations in fat content will be expressed in percentage points (±1 and ±2), as provided by Regulation (EU) No 445/2007, rather than in percent.

The changes will take effect on 1 January 2029, together with Order No. 801.
