China has officially approved imports of dairy products from Romania. As Bloomberg reports, the decision by China’s General Administration of Customs opens access for Romanian producers to a dairy market worth 510 billion yuan (approximately $71 billion).

The approval allows qualifying Romanian producers to supply a broad range of milk and dairy products — including cheese, milk powder, whey products and infant formula — made from cow, sheep or goat milk that comply with China’s food safety standards.

Romanian export facilities must be officially approved by Romanian authorities and registered with Chinese regulators. Fresh milk must originate from farms free of serious animal diseases and under official veterinary supervision. All shipments require veterinary health certificates and must meet Chinese requirements for residue limits, processing methods and full traceability.

According to China’s Ministry of Agriculture, on 17 March China and Romania signed a memorandum on agricultural cooperation to support the expansion of agri-food trade. According to the China Dairy Industry Association, Chinese dairy companies generated revenues of 510 billion yuan ($71 billion) in 2024.
