Over the first 8 months of 2026, enterprises’ share of total milk production rose to 53.9% — overtaking household farms’ share, which fell to 46.1%, for the first time.
According to preliminary data from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine (SSSU), the structure of Ukraine’s milk production shifted in favour of the industrial sector for the first time in the first 8 months of 2026: enterprises accounted for 53.9% of all milk produced, while household farms accounted for only 46.1%. A year earlier the ratio was reversed: 44.8% versus 55.2% respectively.
A crossover: 44.8% versus 53.9%
Comparing the first eight months of 2025 and 2026 reveals a structural turning point: last year, household farms still produced most of the country’s milk (55.2%), with enterprises accounting for only 44.8%. This year the ratio has flipped — enterprises are now the country’s leading milk source, at 53.9% versus 46.1% for households.
Monthly dynamics: enterprises grow steadily
Enterprise milk production grew year-on-year every single month from January through August 2026: +2.5% in January, +2.8% in February, +2.9% in March, +4.3% in April, +5.6% in May, +7.6% in June, +11.5% in July and +2.8% in August.
Household farms show the opposite pattern: output fell year-on-year by 22-29% every month. The steepest declines came in June and July (-29%), with somewhat smaller falls in April (-25%) and early in the year (-22% in January).
Seasonality within 2026
Within 2026 itself, enterprises’ share of monthly output gradually declined — from 64% in January to 49-51% in May-August — as households’ share rose correspondingly. This is a typical seasonal effect: household farms boost output during the summer grazing season, temporarily lifting their monthly share even as their year-on-year volumes remain well below last year’s levels.
Background
Figures are preliminary estimates from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine (SSSU) on milk production dynamics by producer category — enterprises (industrial dairy farms) and households (personal peasant farms) — for 2023-2026, and on production structure for the first 8 months of 2025 and 2026.
